History[]

As any self-respecting Minecrafter knows, strongholds are massive, underground structures that are very hard to find. However, according to the Book of Notch, there is much more to these structures.

Strongholds first appeared several thousand years after Notch and his Indevians arrived on Earth. They had sufficiently increased the population and prosperity of their society in order to experiment with new forms of civilization and styles of living. Seeing underground civilization as a great way to provide protection while not damaging the surface landscape, Notch's people dug massive structures, primarily for living space, below the Settlement. This grew as other features were added, but the collision of Indev with Earth destroyed the Settlement and the stronghold, erasing most knowledge about this early structure.

Upon Notch's foundation of Arabus and the regrowth of the Indevian civilization, Notch once again began the construction of underground structures as soon as time and resources allowed. These were for long used mainly as storage faucilities and living quarters in cities where space was scarce and population high.

Herobrine introduced strongholds into warfare. They were key in creating effective and almost impenetrable bases during the War. However, Notch's expert mining crews were able to break into the strongholds from underground, allowing Notch's forces to bypass heavy defenses on the surface entrances.

After the conclusion of the War, strongholds were disregarded as costly and useless, and human civilization focused on growth on the surface through the Industrial Revolution. However, when the population exploded and its demands rose, some governments realized that massive underground structures would become necessary in providing living space for swelling masses.

Current State[]

Strongholds such as those in Minecraft are ancient and deteriorating relics of centuries-old structures. The most modern strongholds no longer resemble the survivalist, Spartan tunnels of the old times. Instead, they are better described as extensions of surface cities, sometimes doubling the number of people that a city can support. The largest tunnels exist under the capital of the Kingdom of Jeb, and can support about 1.8 million people in addtion to an extensive underground military base.
